A taxi driver, who operates from the Anloga Taxi Rank, Kumasi, in the Ashanti, Sunday, was subjected to severe beatings by three Police officers who were not in uniform.
Peter Opoku met his ordeal when he was returning from Asokwa via the new road.
He is currently on admission at the Atonsu-Agogo Government where doctors are busily working on his jaw as a result of injuries he suffered from the hands of the cops.
Opoku, Kasapafmonline.com learnt, is in stable condition but four of his teeth are likely to be removed.
A Trustee at the Taxi Rank, Akwasi Boakye, aka Agya Boakye, who narrated the incident to this website said Opoku while returning from Asokwa through the new road at about 2pm Sunday, was behind the Police officers who were in mufti driving an old salon Mercedes Benz.
Both drivers stopped at the Anloga traffic lights after taking notice of the red lights.
“The Police officers were chatting with a friend and when the green lights came on, they still did not move, provoking those behind them, including Opoku, to blow their car horns to alert them to give way. When they finally moved, Opoku was able to move to the outer lane and when he got closer to them, he asked them why they were delaying all the road users”.
“His comment did not go down well with the Police. They insulted him and he also insulted them in return. When he got to the Taxi Rank and just as he was about to step out, the Police officers from nowhere pounced on him and started beating him up”.
“No matter how we intervene, these guys will not listen. They then handcuff him and took him to the Central Police Station instead of the Oforikrom and Zongo Police Stations. At the Police Station, they (Police officers) told their colleagues that Opoku had insulted them and they continued beating him up. Blood was oozing from his head and so we requested that they grant him bail to enable us take him to hospital but they didn’t listen until we called the District Police Commander, Mr. Kwakye who ordered for his immediate release. It was at this point that they sat up and gave him a Police medical form to attend to any government hospital. It was after 7pm that they released him”.
“So, we took him to the Atonsu-Agogo Hospital where they gave him first aid and told us to report the following day because there was no doctor around. As we speak, we are currently at the hospital where a dentist is about to operate on four of his teeth which are likely to be removed”, noted the livid Trustee.
