Nigeria Super Eagles
coach, Stephen Keshi has resigned his appointment after leading the team to the
second round of the 2014 FIFA World Cup.
Speaking after the Eagles were
eliminated by France in the round of 16 match in Brasilia, Monday, the Delta
State-born tactician said it was time to move on after leading his country’s
national team to the Africa Nations Cup trophy last year and the ongoing World
Cup in Brazil.
”
Keshi said. “I have to go back to my family and face fresh challenges. “It’s a
pity we lost. We did not deserve to lose. We can compete
with any team. It was a good performance, but the way we lost was not
good.
“There have been improvements,
the players are very young and in two years, this group will be wonderful.
“Any
loss is painful, be it first round or a friendly game. When you see your team
playing good football and doing what you asked them to do, and all of a sudden
it turns around and you lose the game. I don’t think we deserved to lose this
way, but it’s part of football.
“We
don’t want to start putting blame on one or
two people. The blame is on the entire team. We play as a team. We win as
a team. We lose as a team. So I don’t
Similarly, Super Eagles
Captain, Yobo Joseph said he has had enough and can go no further as national
team player. “I think I should give the younger ones the opportunity to forge
ahead. I have nothing new to offer.”
Vincent
Enyeama has also disclosed that the game against France could be his last
appearance in a Nigerian shirt.
The
Nigerian goalkeeper said after a 0-2 loss to the French national team in the
second round of the Fifa World Cup on Monday that he will still have to “sit
with my wife” before making a decision.
It
is apparent the 31-year-old Nigerian custodian needs time to clear his head and
take stock of what might have been at the World Cup in Brazil.
“At
some point you need to just say may be I’ll take some years off, may be I’ll
take some months off, may be I call it quit. May be I’ll sit with my wife and
see what happens. Hopefully may be, may be it’s my last game,” Enyeama said
after the match.
The
Lille OSC goalkeeper played in all of Nigeria’s four matches at the World Cup.
He
is one of the standout
performers at the Mundial as he made 21 saves and kept two clean sheets in 360
minutes of World Cup football in Brazil.
